Garage door roller replacement
Worn rollers are the cheapest thing on a door to fix and the most common source of noise. A full set of ten nylon rollers runs $170 to $250 installed. If your door has started grinding or screeching, this is the first thing to look at.
Steel or nylon
Plain steel rollers with no bearings are what came on a lot of older doors, and they're loud from the day they're installed. Nylon rollers on sealed bearings are quieter, and they don't gouge the track the way a seized steel roller does.
On mid-century houses that still carry their original hardware, the rollers are long past their design life even where they haven't seized.
How to spot a worn roller
A seized roller drags rather than rolls, and you can often see a flat spot worn on it. A worn stem lets the roller tilt in the track, which is what makes a door rub on one side.
The other sign is a door that sounds different at one point in its travel. That's usually one roller passing a particular part of the track.
What else we check at the same time
Hinges, because a roller riding badly wears the hinge it sits in. The track for gouging. And the bottom brackets, which is where the lift cables terminate and is not a part to touch with the springs loaded.

Will new rollers make the door quiet?
Usually a lot quieter, if the noise is a grinding or screeching sound. A bang on opening or closing is different, and that's normally a section coming off a bent track rather than anything to do with rollers.
How long do nylon rollers last?
Well over a decade in normal use. In a household cycling the door six or eight times a day they'll wear faster, along with everything else on the door.
