New garage door installation

A new sectional steel door installed runs $1,450 to $3,900 depending on size, insulation and finish, and we take the old door away. If your neighborhood has an association that reviews exterior appearance, get approval before ordering and we'll give you the specification sheet you need.

When a new door is the right call

Two or more damaged sections, a discontinued model that can't be matched, corrosion that's reached the bottom brackets, or a door that's simply at the end of a fifty-year life. On a mid-century house the original door has usually been replaced once already, and the replacement is now old too.

It isn't the right call just because a spring broke. A sound door with a broken spring is a spring job.

What changes the price

Size first: a double door costs appreciably more than a single. Then insulation, which matters most on an attached garage with a room above it. Then finish and panel style, and whether you want windows.

Track and hardware are part of the job, not an extra we discover later. If your opening needs a low-headroom kit we say so at the quote, because that's a specification difference rather than an upsell.

The opener question

A new door on an old opener is worth thinking about. If the opener stays, it has to be one that legally may remain in service, and any replacement opener installed in California has to have a battery backup under Health and Safety Code section 19892. We price the door and the opener separately so you can see both.

How the visit goes

  1. We measure the opening, including headroom, backroom and side room, and check whether the frame is square.
  2. You choose size, insulation, panel style and finish, and we give you a written specification you can take to an association if you need approval.
  3. The door is ordered to those measurements.
  4. On installation day the old door and track come out and go with us.
  5. New track, sections, springs sized to the finished door weight, and hardware go in, then we balance the door and test it by hand before connecting an opener.

Where we do this work

San Rafael, Novato, Mill Valley, San Anselmo, Fairfax, Larkspur, Corte Madera. That list is the honest one; where the drive is long we city, not the whole of it.

Questions we get asked

How long does an installation take?

Three to four hours for a single door and four to five for a double, assuming the opening doesn't need work.

Do I need approval from my homeowners association?

In some neighborhoods, yes. Several Marin associations review exterior appearance before a change. Ask before you order, and we'll supply the model, finish and panel details in writing for the submission.

Do you take the old door away?

Yes, removal and disposal are included in the price we quote.
